Crystal River Fishing for May
Report Date: May 17, 2013
As usual, I am way behind with writing fishing reports. When you spend your days on the water, its hard to come home and write about it each day.
The trout bite has been very good lately. Limits and near limits are the norm for most days. However, there are always "those days" when it seems that someone has poisoned the water. But, all in all, this month has been very good with trout up to 25 inches.
Cobia are also on the prowl. We boated one last week but have seen several cruising the surface so they will be more common as we get into summer.
Spanish mackerel are always good throughout the warmer months. These speedsters are always fun and very good to eat. Catches of 10-30 are common while fishing with shrimp.
Tarpon have just started to arrive in Homosassa but are still a little behind schedule with the late cold fronts we have had. It looks like most of my tarpon will be caught in the Sanibel Island to Boca Grande area this year since I spend much of June there chasing these monsters.
Tripletail have been very numerous this spring. Once you see them on the surface and recognize what it is, a well placed shrimp will rarely get refused.
We have also caught and released several big snook in the past month. Most were taken on Mirrolure Little Johns.
