Report Date: December 31, 2020
The attached photo is of Villages resident Dale Karch with his sons Jonathan and Matt. They had a good day catching sheepshead on the Gulf. They were using shrimp for bait ** The last cold snap that brought air temps down into the 20s also dropped the Gulf water temps into the 50s. This appears to have put an end to grouper fishing in shallow waters. A sad ending for anglers wanting to spend the last few days of 2020 grouper fishing. The season ended Dec 31. The good news is that we are already having good catches of Sheepshead. They are the one fish that enjoy cold water. They actually spawn from January into March. However it seems they started earlier than normal. A few black drum, redfish and sea trout are being caught inside any spring fed coastal rivers now. Mostly biting on shrimp fished on or near the bottom.
