Spring has sprung

Report Date: May 5, 2012

I just realized how far behind I have gotten on updating my fishing reports. During the Spring I am on the water almost every day which leaves little time for administrative duties.

This year has started out to be one of the best years in recent history for sea trout fishing on the flats of Crystal River/Homosassa. Limits and near limits of fat trout have been common. The best success has been for those who throw the Mirrolure Little John in either rootbeer or glow white color.
Saltwater Assassins in the new penny copper color fished on a jig head have also been a steady producer.

Tarpon have just started arriving on the Homosassa flats and should increase in numbers as May progresses. My schedule is full for trout, redfish and spanish mackerel fishing thru May so I will not have the opportunity to tarpon fish until June. Hopefully June will be the peak season as it normally is along the gulf coast.
For pure action though, you cannot beat spanish macks. They are going strong now and should remain through the summer. When they hit your bait, there is no question. Your drag is screaming.
No matter what your preference in fishing styles, it is probably happening now. Whether it be casting artificials or simply throwing out bait and waiting for the fish to come to you, now is the time.
